Why people need churches:
Same reason people need any kind of a club.
A place to gather, on a regular basis, with like-minded individuals. And pretend that everyone else is stupid... or unenlightened.
Which is why Spongebob would have the best congregation to belong to.
Everyone is already so idiotic, who can they lord it over??
